Luxembourg, November 18, 2019.  Eczacibasi VitrA won through in a five-set clash against Istanbul neighbours Fenerbahce Opet in front of 4,500+ volleyball fans in the designated Match of the Week.  Last year’s finalists A. Carraro Imoco CONEGLIANO also went the distance with surprise package Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST, whilst also in Pool D there was a win for NANTES VB.  ŁKS Commercecon ŁÓDŹ and RC CANNES were tonights other winners in five and four sets respectively.  Action continues tomorrow with 4 more matches, check out all the action on EuroVolleyTV.

Pool A

Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL (TUR) vs. Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL (TUR) 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10)

Both teams showed how eager they were to begin their #CLVolleyW journey with a win, but despite playing each other two weeks ago, both struggled in block and defence.  The first set was a thrilling one, with experienced spiker Natalia Zilio Pereira (5 pts) and Fenerbahce Opet opposite player Melissa Vargas (6 pts) dominating in the attack.

In the second set, Fenerbahce Opet striked back led by captain Eda Erdem Dündar and Brankica Mihajlovic, yet they couldn’t maintain their lead. Eczacibasi VitrA middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer was vital in block and attack as her team stole the second set to 18 points.  A run of Tijana Boskovic’s jump serves helped Eczacibasi VitrA to a lead at the beginning of the third set, before Fenerbahce Opet fought back strongly with some clever play by Kelsey Robinson securing the set 25-23.

In the fourth set, Fenerbahce Opet kept control of the game and despite nearly throwing it away from 24-19 up, they took the game to the tie-break.  The decider set went on point-by-point until the Orange-and-Whites led the game by 8-5 at the side switch. Once again, Tijana Boskovic took centre stage carrying her team to a 15-10 win in the fifth set and through this result, the Tigers collected their first #CLVolleyW win of the season.

Natalia Pereira was selected as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match, she was also the top scorer with 26 points and came out favourite in the Twitter vote.

Simge Sebnem Aköz, Co-captain and Libero of Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL: “We managed to start our #CLVolleyW campaign with a great win today. I believe we did a great job in putting in our own game strategy by analysing our opponent well before the match. I would like to congratulate all of my teammates and our technical staff. Many thanks to our fans who once again showed their support for us today.”

Zoran Terzic, coach of Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL: “Like everybody expected, it was a really really tough match for all involved. I hope the spectators enjoyed this game because it was very high quality Volleyball from both teams. In the end we lost again against Eczacibasi 2-3. I can’t say “It is bad”, but I am sorry. Hopefully, this is a good score for us for the next games so we can improve some things and play better in both the Champions League and the Turkish Championship.”
